My (Initial) Expectations of a Stay At Home Mom

Before I became a SAHM, I thought that I was going to have all of the free time in the world. “This is going to be a blast!”, I thought; I would get to wake up whenever I wanted, make pancakes and eggs Benedict and muffins and fresh-squeezed OJ for breakfast every morning, take hours long bubble baths while The Little napped, have the house cleaned, dinner prepped and on the table just as my husband walked through the door! *record scratch*

Boy, was I wrong!

Okay, so I didn’t actually think that I’d get the opportunity to be able to do all of that, but I can honestly say that I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Going from a “nine to five” to SAHM was a hard transition and in the beginning, finding my daily rhythm was a struggle. Thankfully, the clouds are finally starting to clear. My days are a lot easier to manage and I’m truly beginning to enjoy my days as a SAHM.

In the beginning, a little part of me told people that I was enjoying my new life choice, and I was, but things are different now, more positive. Maybe it’s because I am finally in a good routine. Maybe it’s because my son is a little more independent and doesn’t need me every step of the way (pun intended because he’s starting to walk!!). Regardless of the reason, I am appreciating this SAHM life in ways I hadn’t before.

What does my typical SAH routine look like?

Another thing that has truly helped, regardless if I like to admit it or not, was the inclusion of some predictability, normalcy if you will. Although I would much rather claim to be a spontaneous rebel, that’s typically not my M.O. and some structure has truly made this SAHM life easier. So what does a typical day look like for us?

  • 9:30 am– Wake up/cuddle and snuggle/get Baby cleaned up
  • 10:00 am– Read a book or do flash cards/play
  • 10:30 am– Let the dogs outside/eat breakfast
  • 11:00 am– Play
  • 12:00 pm– Naptime
    • During naptime, I get dressed, work on a post and/or read a physical book. Sometimes I’ll also take a nap.
  • 2:00 pm– Let the dogs outside again/eat lunch
  • 2:30 pm– Get out of the house (this is how I so frequently end up at Target)
  • 4:00 pm– Play, read, dance and sing until Daddy gets home

For some moms, it is incredibly important for them to stick to a rigid schedule and that’s okay. Sometimes I’m that mom myself! Other times, actually most of the time, I am more of a ‘checklist mom’ rather than a ‘schedule mom’. That means that as long as I check off every item on my list, then my day has been a success.

What does my typical SAH checklist look like?

  • Brush teeth, wash face, change underwear
  • Put on clean clothes
  • Read to my son for at least 10-20 minutes/day
  • Eat two meals and at least one snack (during the day, before my husband gets home)
  • Get some direct sunlight and/or fresh air (why is it cloudy for four straight months here?!)

There is no right or correct way to be a stay at home mom. As long as both Baby and you are happy and healthy, then you are doing just fine!
